Manuscripts for Tortuga

For his first novel, Tortuga, Rudolfo Anaya produced multiple initial drafts, 5 of which are available here. This includes one first draft, two second drafts, a third draft and a near-final draft. The original manuscript documents are in the collections of the Center for Southwest Research at the University of New Mexico Libraries. The complete collection finding aid is available on the Rocky Mountain Online Archive (RMOA) Website.

Tortuga, First Draft - Edited, Pages 1-99 (Part 1 of 2). (MSS 321 BC / B02-F01)

This early draft manuscript, which was originally titled The Roots of Sadness, is divided into two parts because of the length of the document. This part (Part 1) includes pages 1-99 of the draft, while part 2 includes pages 100-213. The draft is a typescript with fairly extensive handwritten edits and corrections by the author.

Tortuga, First Draft - Edited, Pages 100-213 (Part 2 of 2). (MSS 321 BC / B02-F02)

This early draft manuscript, which was originally titled The Roots of Sadness, is divided into two parts because of the length of the document. This part (Part 2) includes pages 100-213 of the draft, while part 1 includes pages 1-99. The draft is a typescript with fairly extensive handwritten edits and corrections by the author. Interestingly, in the second half of the manuscript, the author omits chapter heading markings, so chapter divisions have been estimated.
